Ischemic Heart Disease: Medicare Population

Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percentage of Medicare beneficiaries who were treated for ischemic heart disease.

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for persons aged 65 years or older, persons under age 65 years with certain disabilities, and persons of any age with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Why is this important?

Ischemic heart disease is characterized by the narrowing of the arteries of the heart, resulting in less blood and oxygen reaching the heart muscle. Most ischemic heart disease is caused by atherosclerosis and can result in a heart attack. Ischemic heart disease may be present for quite a long time without being discovered. As the disease progresses and the blood flow to the heart is more restricted, a person may experience chest pains. However, this is not always the case. Risk factors for ischemic heart disease include increased age, smoking status, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, gender, and family history of the disease.
